League of Women Voters of Texas (LWVTX The) joined the lawsuit in support of the DOJ decision. In Texas, a U.S. Federal District Court has agreed with the League and the Department of Justice that their state’s voter photo I.D. law violates Section 5 of the Voting Rights Act and that the law does have a discriminatory effect.
“The importance of this case cannot be overstated: It is a landmark decision for voting rights in America,” said Elisabeth MacNamara, President of the League of Women Voters of the U.S. (LWVUS). “The League in Texas and other states around the country will continue to fight against these restrictive voting laws. This decision helps us ensure America’s elections treat all citizens equally, and are free, fair and accessible.”
A federal judge in Florida has blocked provisions of the law requiring voter registration forms be filed within 48 hours or risk penalties or even jail time for organizations that register voters. That law caused the League to suspend all registration drives in Florida. The League of Women Voters is registering again.
And in Ohio, the Federal court reversed a decision by the governor and state legislature to restrict early voting. The decision restores early voting for all registered voters, not just those in the military.
The three decisions uphold the voting rights of our citizens.
