May Newburger was a seminal force in politics as a former New York State assemblywoman and North Hempstead Town supervisor. She died from cancer on Thursday at her Great Neck home. She was 92 years old.
May Newburger’s life touched the careers of many other politicians as a friend and mentor. Rep. Gary Ackerman called her a champion of environmental protection and women’s rights who “worked tirelessly on scores of issues.”
Assemblywoman Michelle Schimel said, May was “brilliant and articulate, yet remarkably modest, sharing her successes. I love May and will miss her friendship and wise counsel.”
NY State Sen. Jack Martins said, “May was an icon in government … and a trailblazer for women everywhere.”
Jon Kaiman, current TNH supervisor, remembers May “as a woman of such substance and depth…it was an honor to know and work with her. She will be missed.”
