The Nassau County League, with several other good government groups, is advocating for fair redistricting in our county, in accordance with the principles of the Federal Voting Rights Act. League members have delivered statements at county redistricting hearings and have been in attendance at meetings of the Nassau County Temporary Districting Advisory Commission (NCTDAC).
Earlier this summer, the NCTDAC deadlocked along party lines on what criteria to use when drawing the maps. In Newsday, Susan Lerner, Executive Director of Common Cause NY, was quoted as saying: “They voted without hearing from the public first, explaining that ‘public comments are gratuitous.” Our county League’s mission is to ensure that the public is heard. Next meeting is this week. Stay tuned.(This is will be a regular column in the future.)
